Funding opportunities: Severe weather events in Aotearoa/New Zealand
We have compiled a list of grants and funding assistance for those impacted by severe weather events across the country.
It is important to note that not all these opportunities are directly for non-profit organisations — some are for individuals. However, our research team will closely monitor funding updates as they relate to the charitable sector, and we’ll continue to update this post as these opportunities are announced. As always, it is important that you check your eligibility and carefully read the guidelines before applying.
We know that even after the severe weather is long gone, the recovery will be lengthy, difficult, and ongoing. If there is anything else the Strategic Grants team can do to support you — it doesn’t have to be grants related! — please reach out. There are also resources available for anyone needing to speak to a professional, such as Lifeline, Samaritans and Mental Health Foundation.

Funding assistance opportunities
Community Support Fund – apply for up to $3,500
This funding is available for community groups supporting whānau and communities in Auckland and other regions impacted by recent weather events, who are not contracted by a government agency. The funding will allow community groups to maintain their response and recovery efforts so they can continue to support whānau wellbeing. Examples of community groups who can apply are: Local marae, whānau, hapū, iwi; Multicultural councils; Ethnic community organisations; Faith based, religious and church groups; Community Hubs; Not-for-profit organisations and social enterprise.
Community providers fund – apply for up to $7,000
This funding is available for providers supporting communities affected by the recent North Island floods and Cyclone Gabrielle. Providers are considered those who already have government contracts in the social sector, including those funded by MSD, Whaikaha – Ministry of Disabled People, Ministry for Pacific Peoples, Te Puni Kokiri, Ministry for Ethnic Communities and the Department of Internal Affairs. This funding will allow eligible providers to continue to deliver their response and recovery efforts, respond to increased demand on their services, and support the wellbeing of their staff and volunteers. This funding is not intended to replace or cover insurance related matters.
Work and Income – Te Hiranfa Tangata
Support and assistance may be available if you’ve been affected by Cyclone Gabrielle or the flooding in the Auckland region. There are lots of ways we can help, and we can point you in the right direction based on your situation. You don’t have to be on a benefit. You may have to pay the money back, depending on your situation.

Civil Defence Payment
If you and your family are affected by an emergency event, you may be able to get a Civil Defence Payment. You don’t have to be on a benefit to qualify for a Civil Defence payment. Non-residents may be eligible for this payment. In most cases it doesn’t matter what your income is or what assets you have.

Auckland Council Emergency Relief Fund
The Auckland Council Emergency Relief Fund supports people who are experiencing hardship due to disasters and need urgent financial assistance. The fund is in addition to other support that people may qualify for through the Ministry of Social Development. Applications will be accepted until 27 February 2023, or until the Fund is fully allocated.

Rural Women New Zealand
Funding is available to individuals, communities, and groups, with a particular emphasis on rural women and children.

Helping Hands Grant (museums, galleries or iwi groups)
Maximum funding request: $2,000
Auckland Business Support Funding
$5 million support package from Government. The funding will be delivered through Auckland Business Chamber, the Employers and Manufacturers Association, Whāriki (Auckland’s Māori Business Network), and the Pacific Business Trust.
